Getting Started with Cloud Native Development on Ampere

At Ampere, we call ourselves a cloud-native semiconductor company. Our processors are designed from the ground up specifically for the needs of cloud native workloads. They have very high core density (80 physical cores on Ampere Altra, and 128 cores on Ampere Altra Max). Each core is single-threaded, which means that workloads have predictable performance, and do not suffer from the noisy-neighbor problems, seen on legacy x86 architectures.

Many cloud native applications include: - a load balancing front-end - used to distribute traffic across many nodes; caching for the data; and a backend database. In a microservice architecture, an application will run on many small nodes, which can be containers or virtual machines. It will scale on-demand as traffic increases, while monitoring the quality of the user experience. Because cloud native workloads tend to have several components, good isolation and predictable performance under load are critical. Our processors also include generous amounts of L2 cache per core, to give high performance for the cache-intensive workloads – which are typical of cloud applications.
